An estimated 30-40 million people in America are at risk of evictions. Analysts predict the United States is facing an unprecedented housing crisis with over 20 percent of renter households behind on rent and hundreds of thousands of evictions filed. While renters struggle to make ends meet, private equity funds have stockpiled over 300 billion dollars to buy distressed properties, which will exacerbate the crisis even further. Philanthropy has not shifted nearly enough resources to match the urgency of the crisis.
As the country struggles to come to grips with the ongoing killings of Black people and the Covid 19 health crisis, it is critical that funders understand housing as a health and racial justice issue. Communities of color have led successful campaigns to protect renters and other efforts to expand tenant rights and power are ongoing. These victories include making it easier for rent debtors to access assistance and requirements for landlords to proactively help tenants. Much more support is needed for these victories to be implemented and expanded, and without such support, opportunities to expand housing security and create wealth may be lost.
Join NFG, Engage New York, and the Neighborhoods First Fund for a two-part webinar series to discuss the state of housing advocacy and organizing campaigns and hear from movement leaders, housing scholars, and journalists about their work and what they need from funders.
The first webinar, The Urgency of Now: What Funders Need to Know About the Housing Crisis, will brief funders on the urgency of the crisis and what short term victories have been won. Come to learn who is helped and who is left out of short-term relief, and how local campaigns in New York are engaging in budgetary process to win immediate assistance for renters. The second webinar, Sustainable Housing Solutions: Effective Interventions and Long-term Strategies, will share high-level forward thinking strategies to combat evictions through the creation and expansion of pro-renter institutions.
