Places Often Overlooked By National Philanthropy
We selected the following places for our grantmaking because of: 1) the exciting power building work led by Black and indigenous people, people of color, and low-income people, 2) the presence of power building groups focused on our issue areas, 3) the relative absence of national philanthropy, and 4) the potential to mobilize local philanthropic dollars.
In each place, we followed the guidance of local advisors, and the wisdom of those with lived-experience, to develop context-specific strategies. To read the place-based strategies, see below.
California
Through our partnership with the Fund for an Inclusive California (F4ICA), we support a community of grassroots leaders and nonprofits committed to pursuing transformative approaches that will achieve well-being and housing for all in California.
Missouri
Nevada
Amplify Fund’s original grantmaking strategy in Nevada identified housing and public spending as areas of focus. The updated strategy, finalized in 2025, added the following grantmaking priorities: cost of living and wages, access to mental healthcare, environmental impacts on health, attacks on immigrants, and the criminalization of homelessness.
Eastern North Carolina
Amplify Fund’s original grantmaking strategy in Eastern North Carolina identified land and environmental justice, a just recovery, and civic engagement as priorities. The updated strategy, finalized in 2026, stressed the importance of public education, access to healthcare and healthy food, and safety as additional grantmaking areas.
Western Pennsylvania
Amplify Fund’s original grantmaking strategy in Western Pennsylvania was narrowly focused on expanding BIPOC-led organizations in the region. The updated strategy, finalized in 2025, articulated the problems that needed to be addressed in the region including: affordable housing shortages, food deserts, low wage jobs, limited public transportation, healthcare access, poor air and water quality, and increased criminalization/militarization.
Puerto Rico
Amplify Fund’s original grantmaking strategy in Puerto Rico was developed after Hurricane Maria, and tried to address the housing, energy, environmental, and funding crises. The updated strategy, finalized in 2025, redefined the original issues, and expanded the scope of our grantmaking to include organizations working against mental health crises, policing and criminalization, poverty, and gender-based and anti-Black violence.
South Carolina
Tennessee
Amplify Fund’s original grantmaking strategy in Tennessee focused on addressing corporate power and affordable housing shortages. The updated strategy, finalized in 2025, added other important issues including: protecting public lands and public education, addressing low wages and undignified work, and protecting the safety and mental health of underserved communities.
