Rising inequality is having an unprecedented impact on families. “Helping professionals,” who interact with families, such as doctors, teachers, and social workers, are also mandated reporters required to report suspected harm. However, as professionals, they are often trained to read the conditions of poverty as neglect, which criminalizes systemic disinvestment and feeds a growing pipeline into the “child welfare system.”
Immigrant justice organizations and their coalition partners are sounding the alarm on cooperation between the family regulatory system and criminal and immigration systems, and their disproportionate focus on Black immigrant families and undocumented people. This legacy of family regulation in the guise of supporting family well-being has separated Black, Latine, immigrant, and Indigenous families for centuries.
Across New York State, community partners are pushing back. Join grassroots organizations Justice for Migrant Families, Hope 585, VOCAL-NY, and For The Many for a breakfast conversation with Andrea Ritchie from Interrupting Criminalization to discuss how Right-wing, authoritarian, and fascist agendas gain strength through criminalization and how philanthropy can support effective coalitions to combat authoritarianism by also narrowing the front door on the family regulatory system.
